What appears to be an act of revenge has claimed the life of Andrew Mandiwe, the former chairman of Mbayani Market, who was brutally beaten to death by a mob in Mbayani Township on Wednesday morning.
Mandiwe, 45, was only recently released on bail after spending three months at Chichiri Prison, where he was awaiting trial for a murder case connected to an incident in Mbayani earlier this year.
Police say residents spotted Mandiwe in the market and, angered by his return, set upon him with violence. He was severely assaulted and his vehicle set on fire before police officers could intervene.
Blantyre Police spokesperson Mary Chiponda confirmed that Mandiwe was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. A post-mortem revealed he died from severe head injuries.
Police have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators, urging the public to assist with information.
Mandiwe hailed from Kapalamula Village, Traditional Authority Nsamala, Balaka District.
