Information reaching this publication indicates that clearing agents at the Mwanza Border have downed their tools, demanding the removal of the station manager and three other Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) staff members.

The agents, led by their chairman Colentino Nthani, accuse MRA officers of unprofessional conduct, resulting in unnecessary delays in clearing imported goods.

According to Nthani, trucks carrying essential goods are supposed to be cleared within two hours, but it is now taking up to five days.

This inefficiency has led to congestion at the border and blame being wrongly placed on clearing agents.

Nthani further alleged that some officers are deliberately sabotaging operations while intimidating agents.

In response to the standoff, the Commissioner for Customs, Cornelius Kakwesa, has travelled from Blantyre to engage with the agents and address their concerns.

Meanwhile, the border remains closed, with no trucks being allowed to enter or exit.
