Malawian versatile rapper Duncan Zgyambo, popularly known as Gwamba, has pledged financial support to 8-year-old Chikondi, a boy who has been living in hardship and resorting to begging at night around drinking spots in Blantyre.
The plight of Chikondi came to light through a video shared recently by Rodwell Lumbe of Citizen Talk Show. In the clip, the boy revealed that he lives with his mother in Ntoso, Chirimba, and that he has never been to school despite having the desire to get an education.
Chikondi is the fifth-born in a family of seven. His mother, who separated from his father in Zomba before moving to Blantyre, struggles to provide for the children by selling leafy vegetables to pay rent and buy food. On some days, when food runs out at home, Chikondi goes to the streets to beg and collect bottles for resale.
Recently, the boy sustained a stitched wound on his mouth after being beaten by older street children while begging. Alongside his peers, he often sleeps outside on the bare ground, covered only with plastic sheets near a roadside chips stall for warmth.
The story touched many people online, including Gwamba, who responded to Lumbe’s video by pledging K1 million in total K500,000 to help Chikondi’s mother start a small business and another K500,000 to support Chikondi’s schooling.
Calling the situation “a very sad story,” Gwamba said:
“Let me help the mother with K500,000 to start a small business, and let me help 8-year-old Chikondi with K500,000 so he can start going to school. Kindly send me your account, I will send you K1 million. Continue this wonderful work that you do, my brother.”
