Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja has cautioned political parties against making premature declarations of victory, reminding them that only MEC has the legal mandate to announce official results.

Her warning comes after both the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) held press briefings, each claiming to be in the lead in the ongoing tallying process.

On Wednesday, MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila told reporters at the party’s headquarters in Lilongwe that the ruling party was confident of victory, predicting a win with over “70+1” of the vote.

In response, the opposition DPP  also convened a press conference, declaring that it was ahead of MCP by a significant margin. The party claimed Malawians had voted overwhelmingly to remove MCP through the ballot  unlike the protests that led to the 2020 election rerun.

Justice Mtalimanja emphasized that the tallying process is still underway and urged all parties to respect the rule of law and wait for MEC’s official announcement of results.
