DPP’s Mutharika Takes Early Lead with 50,131 Votes

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) last night announced the official results for four council districts, which show that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate, Peter Mutharika, is leading with 50,131 votes.

He is followed by the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) candidate, Lazarus Chakwera, who so far has 13,139 votes from the four districts.

The results as announced by MEC are as follows:

• Likoma

  • Peter Mutharika: 4,177 votes

  • Lazarus Chakwera: 1,817 votes

• Kasungu Municipality

  • Peter Mutharika: 7,831 votes

  • Lazarus Chakwera: 8,818 votes

• Luchenza Municipality

  • Peter Mutharika: 7,547 votes

  • Lazarus Chakwera: 336 votes

• Mwanza

  • Peter Mutharika: 30,576 votes

  • Lazarus Chakwera: 2,228 votes

MEC is expected to make announcement of more results today.
