MEC Announces Results From 13 Council, Mutharika Continue To Dominate

Last night, the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) through its chairperson, Justice Annabel Mtalimanja announced results from four additional districts and councils: Chitipa, Rumphi, Mulanje, and Mzuzu City.

This brings the total number of councils with declared results to 13 out of 36, as the commission continues to release official outcomes from the 2025 general elections.

Chitipa District Council had a total of 86,980
registered voters, a total of 68,131 voters turned up for voting representing
78.3 percent. There were 1,173 void votes. This represents 1.7 percent.
There were 66,958 total valid votes in the district distributed as follows:
1. Dr. Joyce Hilda BANDA of the People’s Party (PP), 4,743 votes
2. Thokozani BANDA Manyika INDEPENDENT; 535 votes
3. Akwame BANDAWE of Anyamata,Atsikana, Azimayi (AAA), 667
votes
4. Dr. Lazarus McCarthy CHAKWERA of Malawi Congress Party (MCP),
13,936 votes
5. Kamuzu CHIBAMBO of People’s Transformation Party (PETRA) 436
votes
6. Adil James CHILUNGO, INDEPENDENT, 153 votes

7. Cosmas Felix CHIPOJOLA, INDEPENDENT, 228 votes
8. Dr. Dalitso KABAMBE of UTM Party (UTM), 9,035 votes
9. Atupele Austin MULUZI of the United Democratic Front (UDF), 687
votes
10.Prof. Arthur Peter MUTHARIKA of the Democratic Progressive
(DPP), 35,827 votes
11. Phunziro MVULA, INDEPENDENT, 109 votes
12.FrankTumpale MWENIFUMBO, of the National Development Party

Rumphi District Council had a total of 94,936
registered voters, a total of 67,982 voters turned up for voting representing
71.6 percent. There were 1,390 void votes. This represents 2.0 percent.
There were 66,592 total valid votes in the district distributed as follows:
1. Dr. Joyce Hilda BANDA of the People’s Party (PP), 3,066 votes
2. Thokozani BANDA Manyika INDEPENDENT; 417 votes
3. Akwame BANDAWE of Anyamata,Atsikana, Azimayi (AAA), 530
votes

4. Dr. Lazarus McCarthy CHAKWERA of Malawi Congress Party (MCP),
24,486 votes
5. Kamuzu CHIBAMBO of People’s Transformation Party (PETRA) 242
votes
6. Adil James CHILUNGO, INDEPENDENT, 74 votes
7. Cosmas Felix CHIPOJOLA, INDEPENDENT, 115 votes
8. Dr. Dalitso KABAMBE of UTM Party (UTM), 6,627 votes

Mulanje District Council had a total of 279,761
registered voters, a total of 231,763 voters turned up for voting
representing 82.8 percent. There were 5,251 void votes. This represents
2.3 percent. There were 226,512 total valid votes in the district distributed
as follows:

1. Dr. Joyce Hilda BANDA of the People’s Party (PP), 692 votes
2. Thokozani BANDA Manyika INDEPENDENT; 334 votes
3. Akwame BANDAWE of Anyamata,Atsikana, Azimayi (AAA), 343
votes
4. Dr. Lazarus McCarthy CHAKWERA of Malawi Congress Party (MCP),
3,195 votes
5. Kamuzu CHIBAMBO of People’s Transformation Party (PETRA) 239
votes
6. Adil James CHILUNGO, INDEPENDENT, 190 votes

Mzuzu City Council had a total of 76,629 registered
voters, a total of 56,776 voters turned up for voting representing 74.1
percent. There were 967 void votes. This represents 1.7 percent. There
were 55,809 total valid votes in the district distributed as follows:
1. Dr. Joyce Hilda BANDA of the People’s Party (PP), 1,078 votes
2. Thokozani BANDA Manyika INDEPENDENT; 116 votes
3. Akwame BANDAWE of Anyamata,Atsikana, Azimayi (AAA), 154
votes
4. Dr. Lazarus McCarthy CHAKWERA of Malawi Congress Party (MCP),
15,013 votes
5. Kamuzu CHIBAMBO of People’s Transformation Party (PETRA) 132
