Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson, Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, has expressed concern over claims by some political party leaders that they have won this year’s election before the official results are announced.
Speaking during a press briefing, Justice Mtalimanja emphasized that only the Commission is legally mandated to declare election results.
“It is only the Malawi Electoral Commission that is mandated to announce the results of the election,” she said.
She noted a growing trend where some candidates and political parties are prematurely declaring victory, a move she described as irresponsible and potentially destabilizing.
Justice Mtalimanja urged all political leaders and candidates to be mindful of their public statements and to avoid misleading their supporters.
She said MEC typically refrains from commenting on ongoing political developments, but due to the seriousness of the issue, it was necessary to respond and condemn the behavior.
“Political parties should show responsibility for what they say and speak in a constructive manner,” she added.
