Police in Chikwawa have arrested three men for allegedly being in possession of four pieces of raw ivory without proper authorization.
According to Chikwawa’s Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Chancy Mfune Zare, the arrests followed a tip-off from well-wishers who informed police that the suspects were attempting to sell the ivory illegally.
“The well-wishers informed the police that the suspects were offering raw ivory without the necessary authorization from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife,” said Mfune.
The suspects have been identified as Tobias Kandiado, 27, of Ndakwera Village; Steven Komfosi, 35, of Kanyoza Village, Traditional Authority (TA) Ndakwera in Chikwawa; and Brandon Njinga of Kapherana Village, TA Nthache in Mwanza District.
The three will be charged under Section 110(b) of the National Parks and Wildlife Act for illegal possession of specimens of listed species. They will appear in court once all necessary paperwork is completed.
