The Malawi Police Service (MPS) remains tight-lipped on the progress of its investigation into the eight people it claimed to have arrested in connection with alleged data manipulation during the just-ended elections.

On September 19, police through national spokesperson Peter Kalaya announced that the eight suspects, who were working as Data Entry Clerks at the Nkhoma Constituency Tally Centre in Lilongwe, had been taken into custody. The arrests reportedly followed an investigation linked to the attempted suicide of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Returning Officer for Lilongwe Nkhoma Constituency.

However, nearly a week later, police have declined to reveal either the identities of the suspects or the status of the investigation. Kalaya insisted that details would only be made public through an official press release once the inquiry is concluded.

Meanwhile, the eight unnamed suspects have been granted bail as investigations continue.
