Malawian netizens are roasting self-proclaimed Prophet Austine Liabunya after his prophecy about the 2025 presidential election failed to materialize.

Earlier this year, Liabunya predicted that President Lazarus Chakwera would win the polls. However, results announced by the Malawi Electoral Commission declared Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika as the winner.

In a Facebook live video on Thursday, Liabunya attempted to defend himself, claiming that Chakwera lost because he ignored the spiritual advice he was given.
He further insisted that he has never made a false prophecy, arguing: “Chakwera did not lose, it is the people who have lost.”

Despite his defense, many Malawians have flooded the comments section branding him a false prophet who has consistently failed to deliver any accurate prophecies.

Musician and content creator Waxy K also joined the criticism, accusing Liabunya of misusing God’s name. He mocked the prophet’s style of prophecy, likening it to predicting obvious outcomes such as a phone being fully charged after being plugged in overnight.

The backlash has reignited debate about so-called “prophetic declarations” in Malawi, with many calling for accountability from religious leaders who mislead followers.
