A young man from Mwanza District, identified as Bester Mthepenya Nelson, is battling serious injuries at Mwanza District Hospital after allegedly being brutally assaulted by police officers at Thambani.

According to his father, Nelson Mthepenya Mtitima, the police accused his son of being part of a group suspected of stealing goats in the area. He said officers called the teenager before beating him severely, breaking his thigh bone and leaving him with head and shoulder injuries after being struck with a rifle.

Reports shared online indicate that Boxten Kudziwe, a senior officer at the Centre for Human Rights Education, Advice and Assistance (CHREAA) in Mwanza, has condemned the incident, describing it as deeply troubling. He said such actions show police failing in their duty to protect lives, instead acting like a criminal gang.

Meanwhile, Mwanza Police spokesperson Hope Kasakula said the matter is under investigation. He declined to provide further details, saying police are still establishing the facts.
