The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has congratulated Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader Peter Mutharika on his recent electoral victory and called on him to act swiftly to address critical national issues.
Speaking during a press briefing held today, CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa urged Mutharika not to take time off but to immediately begin the task of rescuing Malawians from what he described as a “burning fire.” He proposed that Mutharika give a 30-day ultimatum to all individuals who stole public funds to voluntarily return the money, warning that those who fail to comply should be arrested without delay.
Namiwa also called for an independent investigation into the tragic plane crash that killed former Vice President Saulos Chilima and eight others, stressing the need for transparency and accountability. Additionally, he demanded that Mutharika terminate all mining contracts that were initiated fraudulently and take steps to ensure sugar is widely available and sold at fair prices.
CDEDI further recommended that the new administration limit the number of cabinet ministers to reduce government expenditure and improve efficiency.
Responding to ongoing public speculation about his political alignment, Namiwa clarified that despite congratulating the DPP leader, he is not a party member and will continue to advocate independently for the rights and welfare of Malawians. He also reminded the public that he has not abandoned his personal pursuit of justice, noting that he was assaulted by police officers in the past and still intends to take action.
