Thyolo First Grade Magistrate’s Court has convicted and sentenced a 31-year-old scrap metal dealer, Patrick Julius, for being found in possession of stolen property belonging to the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) and the Southern Region Water Board.
State Prosecutor Inspector Ishmael Abubast told the court that police raided Julius’ home at Ndalama Village, where they recovered 53 metres of fibre wire valued at K400 million, which ESCOM confirmed as its property. Officers also found three damaged water meters belonging to the Southern Region Water Board.
Julius pleaded guilty to both charges. Magistrate Kondani Chinangwa fined him K500,000 for the first count and K400,000 for the second. In default of payment, he faces 12 months in prison for each count.
The convict, who is yet to pay the fines, hails from Nachipo Village, Traditional Authority Mkhumba in Phalombe District.
