Thyolo First Grade Magistrate’s Court has convicted and sentenced 31-year-old scrap metal dealer, Patrick Julius, for possessing stolen property belonging to the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) and the Southern Region Water Board.

State Prosecutor Inspector Ishmael Abubast told the court that police raided Julius’ home at Ndalama Village, where they recovered 53 metres of fibre wire worth K400 million, confirmed by ESCOM as its property. Officers also found three damaged water meters belonging to the Southern Region Water Board.

Julius pleaded guilty to both charges. Magistrate Kondani Chinangwa fined him K500,000 for the first count and K400,000 for the second, with a 12-month custodial sentence for each in default.

Julius, who is yet to pay the fines, comes from Nachipo Village, Traditional Authority Mkhumba in Phalombe.
