Police in Mzuuzu arrested two Pakistani nationals on Thursday for allegedly being found in possession of ivory. The suspects have been identified as Shahid Amid, 43, and Shakeeb Khan, 48.
According to Deputy Public Relations Officer, Sub Inspector Cecelia Mfune, the arrest was the result of a special operation conducted by the National Police Headquarters’ Wildlife and Environmental Crimes team in collaboration with detectives from the Northern Region Police Headquarters.
Mfune stated that the operation was launched after police received a tip-off about individuals offering ivory and ivory products for sale. The two men were subsequently arrested behind Centenary Bank.
“Police have since recovered ivory items and a raw piece of ivory weighing about 17 kilograms from their vehicle, a Toyota Ractis with registration number NS 6909, which has also been seized,” Mfune said.
The suspects are expected to appear in court soon to answer charges of possession of listed species and dealing in government trophy, offences which are contrary to Sections 86 and 91 of the National Parks and Wildlife Act.
