A 26-year-old man, Kondwani Banda, has drowned in the Rukuru River at M’bozo Village, near Embangweni in Mzimba District, police say.

Jenda Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Precious Mzungu stated that Banda had gone to the river with friends. While there, he complained of feeling excessively hot and decided to swim in the river to cool off.

“Despite warnings from his friends about the depth and danger of the water, Banda proceeded to enter the river. He struggled to stay afloat and disappeared beneath the surface, failing to resurface,” said Mzunga.

His friends immediately alerted authorities, who mobilized a team of divers to retrieve his body.

The incident was reported to Embangweni Police Unit and a medical practitioner from Embangweni Mission Hospital accompanied officers to the scene.

A postmortem confirmed that Banda died of suffocation.
