United Transformation Movement (UTM) President Dalitso Kabambe has expressed deep concern over reports of serious damage to Kamuzu State House, calling the incident a “gross act of negligence” and demanding accountability from those responsible.
In a strongly worded statement, Kabambe accused the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and President Lazarus Chakwera of failing to address what he described as a serious security breach at one of the country’s most protected national assets.
“The reports of serious damage to Kamuzu State House are very concerning. We demand an apology from MCP and President Chakwera,” said Kabambe. “Those responsible for this chaos must be held accountable. The staff in charge of security and maintenance, who are still government employees, should be questioned immediately.”
Kabambe emphasized that the State House is a high-security zone and any breach should not be taken lightly. He criticized what he called a display of “arrogance and impunity” by the leadership of MCP, lamenting their silence over the alleged incident.
“It is disheartening that the former President and the leadership of MCP have not condemned these actions. Instead, they remain silent. Attacking the State House is a serious offense, almost treasonous, and must be treated as such,” he said.
Calling for transparency and justice, Kabambe proposed that an independent evaluator be appointed to assess the extent and cost of the damage. He also urged that those found responsible should be arrested and held financially liable.
“There is no room for political excuses or persecution after such behavior,” Kabambe stated. “This is sabotage against Malawi, and we cannot allow it.”
He further called on Malawians to unite and focus on rebuilding the country, warning that acts of sabotage and violence only serve to damage Malawi’s image and weaken its future prospects.
“The election is over; now is the time to focus on reconstruction and national unity. We must support the government in rebuilding our economy—without sabotage or violence,” he concluded.
As of now, there has been no official response from the State House or the Malawi Congress Party regarding the allegations or the reported damage.
