The First Grade Magistrate Court at Mponela in Dowa has fined a 27-year-old man, Madalitso Tsanzo, K1.5 million or, in default, to serve 12 months imprisonment with hard labour for being found in possession of medical drugs without a license.
Confirming the development, Mponela Police Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Macpatson Msadala, said the court heard through State Prosecutor Sub Inspector Vincent Mtalawe that Tsanzo was arrested on October 14, 2025, at Mponela Trading Centre after being found with assorted medical drugs in his bag.
“Tsanzo was found with 21 tablets of Azitromicina, 1,000 boxes of Salbutamola tablets, 60 vials of Medogen suspension for injection, and 400 tablets of Diclofenac, but failed to produce legal supporting documents for the drugs. A search at his home also led to the discovery of 1,000 capsules of Amoxicillin and 1,000 tablets of Metronidazole,” said Msadala.
In court, Tsanzo pleaded guilty to the charge of possessing medical drugs without a licence. Prosecutor Mtalawe then asked the court to impose a stiff penalty to deter others from committing similar offences.
Passing the sentence, First Grade Magistrate Talakwanji Mndala concurred with the state’s submission and fined Tsanzo K1.5 million, or in default, 12 months imprisonment with hard labour.
Tsanzo, who comes from Missi Village in the area of Senior Chief Chakhaza in Dowa District, was yet to pay the fine by the time of reporting.
