The Malawi Women’s National Football Team, the Scorchers, played to a goalless draw against Angola in the first leg of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers at the Estádio 11 de Novembro in Luanda on Thursday.
The Scorchers dominated much of the match but were left frustrated after failing to convert several clear chances despite controlling the game from start to finish.
Head Coach Lovemore Fazili expressed optimism that his charges will complete the job in the return leg at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on October 28, where a win would see Malawi qualify for the continental finals for the first time in history.
“We played much better and I was expecting goals, especially in the first half. In the second half, we had plenty of opportunities but didn’t utilize them,” Fazili said after the match.
Led by captain Tabitha Chawinga, Rose Kabzere, and Faith Chimzimu, the Scorchers repeatedly tested Angola’s defense. Chawinga came close in the 34th minute with an effort that rolled just wide, while Asimenye Simwaka narrowly missed in the 67th minute after a fine setup from the skipper. Late in the game, Tabitha’s curling free-kick struck the wall as Malawi continued to push for a breakthrough.
Despite failing to score, Fazili praised his players’ performance and determination.
“I have to thank the players for the way they played. They’ve promised me that when we go home, we are going to finish the game,” he said.
The Scorchers’ defense and goalkeeper impressed with a composed display that kept Angola at bay. With home advantage and a solid performance to build on, Malawi will return to Lilongwe confident of sealing a historic qualification when the two teams meet again next week.
