Blantyre Police Arrest Suspect in Killing of Elderly Woman at Baluti

Police in Blantyre are keeping in custody a man identified as Francis Chagunda, suspected of murdering 83-year-old Violet Nyambale Mtambo, who was found dead in her house at Baluti on August 30, 2025.
Blantyre Police Officer-in-Charge Aubrey Kawale has confirmed the arrest, identifying the suspect as Francis Chagunda, born on March 2, 2001, from Mwenemazongoni Village, Traditional Authority Mwenewenya, Chitipa District.
Kawale said Chagunda was arrested in Ndirande after being caught stealing, and during police interrogation, he voluntarily confessed to killing Mtambo.
According to police, Chagunda admitted that he went to the elderly woman’s house to steal but decided to kill her after she recognized him.
Postmortem results revealed that Mtambo’s neck was broken and she sustained severe head injuries during the attack.
The suspect remains in police custody and will appear in court soon to answer murder charges.
