Police have arrested six individuals suspected of assaulting human rights activist Sylvester Namiwa and several civil servants during separate demonstrations earlier this year.
National Police Deputy Spokesperson Alfred Chimthere confirmed the arrests and identified the suspects as Alfred Kadula, Joseph Tilibe Gedion, Lameck Mandowa, Lester Henleck Kungunga, Haward Hamuzza, and Mabvuto Njuchi.
According to Chimthere, the suspects have already appeared in court and are expected to return soon to continue answering charges related to the incidents.
Namiwa, who heads the Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI), was attacked in June 2025 while leading demonstrations demanding the resignation of Malawi Electoral Commission Chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja.
In a separate incident, some civil servants were also assaulted and injured while staging protests over poor salaries and working conditions.
Police say investigations are ongoing and have warned that anyone found guilty will face the full force of the law.
