Speeding Vehicle Leaves One Dead, Several Injured in Chitipa

A 40-year-old man, Owen Silumbu, has died following a vehicle accident in the Misuku Hills area of Chitipa District.
Chitipa Police Station spokesperson, Gladwell Simwaka, confirmed the accident, stating that the incident occurred on 28 October 2025 at approximately 10:30 pm in the Kalenge area along the Kapoka–Misuku Road.
Simwaka said the driver of the motor vehicle a Toyota Hilux pickup was transporting seven passengers from Misuku Trading Centre to Kapoka. Upon reaching the Kalenge area, the driver, who was descending the hills, lost control of the vehicle due to speeding.
The vehicle swerved sharply off the road, throwing the passengers out.
“Two passengers sustained serious injuries in the impact and were rushed to Chitipa District Hospital. Owen Silumbu was pronounced dead upon arrival due to severe head injuries. The remaining passengers sustained various injuries and have been admitted to the district hospital for treatment,” he said.
The driver fled the scene immediately after the incident.
Meanwhile, police have launched an investigation to trace and apprehend the suspect.
