A headman from Chimulu Village in Chasefu District, Zambia, has displayed extraordinary bravery after fighting and killing a leopard that attacked him while he was collecting firewood in the bush.

The incident happened yesterday on 28 October  around 8:00 AM when Binwell Nyirenda, aged between 40 and 45, popularly known as Headman Yolamu, was cutting trees for domestic use. According to eyewitnesses, the leopard suddenly charged at him from behind a thicket.

Armed only with an axe, Nyirenda fought fiercely for his life, striking the wild cat multiple times until he eventually killed it.

“I just saw it coming from behind the bush. I had no choice but to defend myself. It was a matter of life and death,”

said Nyirenda, who sustained minor injuries on his arms and legs.

Villagers who rushed to the scene found the lifeless leopard nearby and helped escort the injured headman home for medical attention.

Officials from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife have since been informed and are expected to visit the area to assess the situation.

Locals have hailed Nyirenda as a “true village hero” for his courageous act, saying his bravery saved not only his own life but possibly others in the area.

Authorities have meanwhile urged the public to exercise caution when entering bushy areas, especially during the dry season when wild animals tend to wander closer to human settlements in search of food and water.
