One Dead, Two Injured After Liwonde Park Rangers Open Fire on Fishermen

One person has died while two others are receiving treatment at Machinga District Hospital after being shot by Liwonde National Park game rangers on Monday night.

The three were reportedly part of a group found fishing along the Shire River inside the park when rangers on patrol opened fire.

Wongani Nyirenda, spokesperson for Machinga District Hospital, confirmed that the victims were brought to the facility on Monday night and that one of them died on Wednesday while being referred to Zomba Central Hospital.

Shaib Kadewere, manager of Liwonde National Park, said the park, in collaboration with police, has launched an investigation into the incident.

Police are yet to issue a comment on the matter.
