Sameer Suleman has been elected Speaker of the National Assembly, defeating Peter Dimba, Sandram Scott, and Lasten Vigalo in a closely watched parliamentary vote held today.
Suleman secured 134 votes, while Dimba received 85, with Scott and Vigalo failing to get any votes. The Clerk of Parliament announced that two members were absent and one member abstained.
Suleman’s victory positions him as head of the legislative arm of government, responsible for maintaining order and guiding debates in the National Assembly.
In the same sitting, the House also elected Mulanje Bale legislator Victor Musowa of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as First Deputy Speaker, after he garnered 134 votes, defeating Emmanuel Chambulanyina Jere of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), who got 60 votes, and Catherine Mzumara of the UTM Party, who managed 24 votes.
Voting for the Second Deputy Speaker position later saw Esther Jolobala emerge victorious.
Following the elections, former President Peter Mutharika extended his congratulations to Speaker Sameer Suleman, First Deputy Speaker Victor Musowa, and Second Deputy Speaker Esther Jolobala for their victories.
In a statement, Mutharika said he nominated Suleman for the position of Speaker with full confidence in his leadership qualities and experience, which he has consistently shown in various portfolios over the years.
“To Honourable Suleman, this is your moment to serve and shine. Be assured of my full support as you assume the office of head of the legislative arm of government,” Mutharika said.
He also congratulated Musowa and Jolobala, expressing confidence that with the three at the helm, Parliament will be vibrant and effective in serving the nation.
