A court in Ntcheu District has ordered Brave Phiri, 30, to pay a fine of K10 million or face three years in prison for possession of marijuana without a permit.
According to Ntcheu Police spokesperson Jacob Khembo, the court, through Prosecutor Inspector James Ngupa Muyira, heard that Phiri was arrested at the Sharpvalle checkpoint after being found with 124.26 kilograms of marijuana in his Nissan X-Trail, registration number BT14135.
Khembo said the accused pleaded guilty to the charge, and the state requested a stiff penalty, arguing that such offences pose a danger to society.
Phiri entered his guilty plea on October 21, a day after the same court fined two other men for possessing marijuana without a permit.
He asked the court for leniency, citing family responsibilities, but Judge Imran Alley Abu upheld the prosecution’s request and imposed the K10 million fine or, in default, three years’ imprisonment.
Phiri, who comes from Talasa Village in the Chikowi area of Zomba District, had not yet paid the fine at the time of reporting.
