High Court Judge Allan Muhome has set November 11, 2025 as the day he will deliver a ruling in the civil case where two parliamentary candidates for Blantyre City South Lunzu are challenging the Parliamentary results that were declared by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).
MEC declared Veronica Pempho Ndalama of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as the rightful winner of the Parliamentary poll.
When the case resumed for hearing on Monday morning lawyer for the petitioners, Michael Goba Chipeta, told the High Court that the first respondent in the case, Veronica Pempho Ndalama, used bribes and rewards to influence voters.
Chipeta also accused the second respondent in the matter the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) abdicating its duty by failing to hear the complaint and reffered the matter to the registrar of political parties.
According to Chipeta, the registrar of political parties has no powers to solve irregularities or issues to do with electoral issues.
In response, the lawyer for the first respondent, Fred Chipembere, pleaded with the court to dismiss since the application was made before MEC decision on the matter.
Chipembere went further to claim that witnesses in the case are basing their arguments based on hearsays and not facts.
Judge Muhome has since adjourned the case to next week.
Independent Candidate Alex Achalume Chimwala and former Minister Rashid Gaffer are the complainant in the case and they want Ndalama to disqualify Ndalama and bar her from contesting in the next polls.
