Residents of Ndirande in Blantyre were left horrified after a 20-year-old man, Geoffrey Mwambazi, allegedly poured boiling cooking oil on a one-year-old baby, following a heated argument with the child’s mother a local kanyenya (grilled fish) seller.
According to Ndirande Police spokesperson, Chibisa Mulimbika, the incident occurred when Mwambazi reportedly ate K600 worth of kanyenya but refused to pay, claiming he had already given the woman K2,000 and was owed change.
When the woman confronted him to settle the matter, Mwambazi allegedly assaulted her, grabbed the frying pan, and splashed hot oil on her baby in the process.
He then fled the scene, leaving the child screaming in pain. The baby was rushed to hospital, where doctors confirmed severe burns on the body.
Police have since arrested Mwambazi, who is expected to appear in court soon to answer charges of causing grievous harm.
