A police officer has been arrested for allegedly breaking into the Mess Bar at Zomba Police College and stealing assorted alcoholic beverages.

The suspect, Charles Chafukira, 58, from Kasungu, works as a chef in the college’s catering section. He is accused of using a duplicate key to gain unauthorized access to the bar.

According to Kumbukani Chilemba, a support staff member at the college, management had noticed recurring shortages in the bar’s fridges and devised a plan to monitor the situation. Chilemba was assigned to sleep inside the bar overnight to keep watch.

In the early hours of today, Chilemba reportedly observed Chafukira entering the bar, loading an empty crate with bottles and attempting to flee. When confronted, two empty beer bottles were thrown at him, one striking him on the chin. Despite the attack, Chafukira initially escaped but was later apprehended by police.

Items recovered include six bottles of Carlsberg Special, four bottles of Castel beer, five bottles of Pomme cider, and several other beverages. Chafukira was found with a deep cut wound during his arrest.

The case is under investigation, and Chafukira is expected to face charges related to theft and trespassing.
