A 46-year-old man from Kaliyeka Township in Lilongwe has narrowly escaped death after angry residents attempted to kill him over allegations that he defiled a 12-year-old girl in the area.
Kawale Police spokesperson, Precious Phiri, identified the suspect as Geoffrey Kamanga, originally from Luwerezi Village, Traditional Authority Mabulabo in Mzimba District.
According to Phiri, the incident occurred when community members caught the suspect in a compromising situation with the girl while her parents were away from home.
“When the parents returned, they were shocked to find the suspect at their house, which led the community to take the law into their own hands,” said Phiri.
Police officers quickly intervened and rescued the suspect from the angry mob before serious harm was done.
Kamanga is currently in police custody and has been charged with defilement, contrary to Section 138 of the Penal Code.
