A 10-year-old boy, Rashid Peter, has tragically lost his life in a drowning incident that occurred on Sunday afternoon, November 9, 2025, in Kanjobvu Village, Traditional Authority Sawali, Balaka District.

Balaka Police Public Relations Officer Gladson M’bumpha confirmed the incident, stating that Peter, who was in the company of another 10-year-old, Handelo Mussa, met his fate after the two went swimming in a nearby dam.

According to M’bumpha, community members rushed to the scene after being alerted about the accident. Peter was retrieved from the water unconscious and taken to Balaka District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

A postmortem conducted at the hospital revealed that the cause of death was suffocation secondary to drowning.

Police have since urged parents and guardians to closely monitor their children and discourage them from swimming in dams or rivers to prevent similar tragedies.
