The High Court in Lilongwe has ordered the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to announce the official winner of the parliamentary election for the Lilongwe Mtandire-Mtsiliza Constituency.

The court’s ruling overturns MEC’s earlier decision to hold a rerun in the area, directing the electoral body to use the results from the September 16 election to declare the winner.

According to the results previously announced by MEC, Alfred Gangata of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) secured 12,289 votes, narrowly defeating George Zulu of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), who got 12,284 votes.

Gangata, who had contested MEC’s plan to conduct a fresh election, is the one who took the matter to court.

With the court’s decision, MEC is now expected to officially declare Gangata as the duly elected Member of Parliament for Lilongwe Mtandire-Mtsiliza.
