A 22-year-old man identified as Jusa Jusa from Thondo Village, under Senior Chief Mbenje in Nsanje District, has died after a mine he was working in collapsed on him on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Nsanje Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Constable Jabulani Ng’oma, Jusa was in the company of five others when the tragic incident occurred at a gold mining site near Milton in the area.
Ng’oma said community members rushed to rescue the trapped miners, successfully pulling out the other five alive. Unfortunately, Jusa was found unconscious and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Kalemba Health Centre.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the mine is illegal and attracts many people from surrounding areas, including some from Mozambique, who engage in unsafe gold mining activities without proper supervision or protective measures.
Police have since urged the public to desist from illegal mining, warning that such activities pose a serious threat to life and safety.
The body of the deceased has since been handed over to the family for burial.
