A man has died after being electrocuted while allegedly attempting to steal or vandalize ESCOM electrical infrastructure in Lilongwe.

In a statement released on Wednesday, ESCOM Limited confirmed that the tragic incident occurred around midnight on Tuesday, 11th November 2025, resulting in a power outage affecting Lilongwe Water Board and some parts of Area 3.

According to ESCOM, the man died on the spot after coming into contact with high-voltage equipment. Police are yet to collect the body from the scene.

The electricity utility company described the incident as “a grim reminder of the extreme danger of tampering with high-voltage power infrastructure,” urging the public to refrain from such acts.

“Vandalism is a direct threat to life and disrupts essential services for homes, hospitals, and businesses,” ESCOM said, adding that the offense attracts severe legal penalties, including lengthy jail terms and heavy fines under the Electricity Act of 2024.
