Former Deputy Inspector General of Police (Operations), Ackis Muwanga, has been arrested by police officers over allegations of extortion.
Deputy National Police Spokesperson Alfred Chimthere confirmed the arrest but referred further inquiries to his superior, Peter Kalaya, who is yet to release full details.
Kalaya, quoted by several online platforms, said the arrest is connected to an ongoing investigation into alleged extortion.
“I can confirm that the former DIG is in our custody, but details will be provided later as investigations, bordering on extortion, are ongoing,” said Kalaya.
Muwanga, who once served as Deputy Inspector General responsible for Operations, was replaced by Stain Chaima during the administration of former President Peter Mutharika.
More details are expected once police conclude their preliminary investigations.
