Police in Nsanje are searching for several villagers from Chatantha Village, Traditional Authority Tengani, who allegedly assaulted and set ablaze a farmer after he shot a pig belonging to another villager.
Nsanje Police deputy spokesperson Jabulani Ng’oma, confirmed the development and said the incident occurred on Saturday night.
According to Ng’oma, the conflict began when a stray pig entered the kraal of well-known livestock farmer Joseph Gomesi. Fearing that the animal might transmit diseases to his livestock, Gomesi reportedly fired a gun and shot the pig.
The action angered the pig’s owner, who mobilized fellow villagers. In retaliation, the group allegedly beat Gomesi and later set him on fire.
Police quickly responded to the scene and managed to rescue the farmer, who was found unconscious. He was rushed to Nsanje District Hospital, where he is receiving treatment for multiple burns and injuries.
Gomesi, aged 56, comes from Mbeta Village, Traditional Authority Malemia, in Nsanje.
Authorities say investigations are underway, and arrests will be made once the suspects are identified.
