Former President Lazarus Chakwera has vowed to continue leading the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and to steer it back into power in 2030.
Speaking at his first press briefing since his election loss on 16 September, in Lilongwe at party’s headquarters, he said he intends to transform the pain of defeat into renewed energy that will strengthen the party.
“As long as I am your president, I will make sure we get back into government,” he declared.
This was also his first public appearance since leaving office last October.
Chakwera warned that growing mistrust within the MCP is undermining the party’s unity, stressing that a political organisation seeking public confidence must “first put its own house in order.”
He said the turbulence facing the MCP should be viewed as a test of character and a moment for members to reflect on why Malawians chose a different leadership.
Chakwera reaffirmed his commitment to steering the party and urged supporters to “unite and work together” as they rebuild trust.
