A 31-year-old man with a mental health condition has died after being set on fire by an angry mob who suspected him of attempting to steal a goat in Bingamvula Village, Ntchisi.

Ntchisi Police spokesperson Salomy Zgambo confirmed the incident yesterday on 23 November 2025.

According to Zyambo, the victim, identified as Haziwelo Maliko, had recently gone missing from a relative’s home where he had been taken for medical assistance.

According to police, Maliko was later found near a goat kraal in the village. Residents, suspecting him of theft, allegedly beat him severely before setting him ablaze.

Zgambo said medical examinations established that Maliko, who came from Chalilima Village under Sub-Traditional Authority Masanya, died due to severe burns sustained during the attack.

Police have condemned the killing and reminded communities that mob justice is illegal, urging the public to report suspected crimes to authorities rather than taking matters into their own hands.
