Police in Nkhata Bay, northern Malawi, have arrested two men on suspicion of stealing assorted goods from a broken-into business shop.

The suspects have been identified as Umali Chikago, 47, and Steven Nkhata, 25, both from Sosola village under Traditional Authority Malanda in the same district.

Nkhata Bay police spokesperson Enala Kalua confirmed the arrests, saying they followed a formal complaint filed by a local entrepreneur whose shop was allegedly burgled by unknown criminals.

“Following intelligence-led investigations, we managed to trace and interrogate the suspects, leading to the recovery of several stolen items,” Kalua said.

Among the recovered property were electronics, including a 55-inch Panasonic plasma television, a Panasonic sound system, a ‘Wow’ branded TV set, a Star No.1 plasma TV and a laptop computer, Kalua added.

Kalua further disclosed that officers retrieved shop merchandise believed to be worth more than K2 million, including glycerine, soya pieces, salt, laundry soap, brushes, toothbrushes, beverages and other assorted items.

The suspects, who both hail from the same village, are expected to appear in court once police conclude investigations.

Authorities have warned communities against buying stolen goods, stressing that the crackdown on burglary suspects will continue as the festive season approaches.
