Police in Nkhotakota have confirmed two separate incidents of suicide involving a 21-year-old man and a 12-year-old schoolgirl, occurring on consecutive days under tragic circumstances that authorities say remain unclear.
According to Andrew Kamanga, publicist for Nkhunga Police Station, Blessings Mlowoka, 21, left his home on the morning of 26 November to drink alcohol. He later returned around 9:00 PM in the company of friends, who witnesses allege were pressuring him to repay borrowed money.
Kamanga explained that Mlowoka told his wife he wanted to sleep alone in their bedroom that night. The following morning, 27 November, his wife discovered he had taken his own life by hanging from the roof of the house.
In a separate incident on the same day, Jean Kalirani, 12, a Standard 6 learner at Chakhalamo Primary School, was found hanging from a tree. Police say the child left behind a note wishing her parents and siblings well, and expressing love for her family.
Mlowoka was from Mzwale Village, while Kalirani was from Chiwembo Village, both under Traditional Authority Kanyenda in the Kanyenda Chiefdom, Nkhotakota District.
Authorities say investigations are continuing to establish the drivers behind both deaths, including psychological and social factors.
Police have urged communities to remain alert and supportive, encouraging families to seek help early when individuals show signs of distress.
