Malawi President Professor Peter Mutharika is expected to leave for South Africa today for a private visit, government officials have confirmed.
The announcement was made by Chief Secretary to the Government, Justin Saidi, in a statement issued last night.
According to the statement, the president will depart Bakili Muluzi International Airport in Blantyre at 2:00 PM.
News of the trip has sparked widespread debate across social media platforms, with some users suggesting the visit could be related to health concerns, while others simply questioned the lack of detail surrounding the journey.
A number of online commentators expressed concern that the president is travelling on a personal visit rather than official state business, prompting speculation about the purpose of the trip.
Despite the online discussions, the government statement made no reference to any medical issues, maintaining that the visit is strictly private and not connected to his duties as Head of State.
Neither the presidency nor government authorities have provided further details, and the nature of the visit remains undisclosed.
