A fuel tanker transporting 35,000 litres of petrol from Beira, Mozambique, to the National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA) caught fire on the Mwanza–Zalewa Road on Friday morning.
The incident occurred on November 29, 2025, involving tanker registration PE 10094/NA 8173, driven by Thomson Kanyamula, according to police.
Neno Police Public Relations Officer Rabecca Msoliza confirmed the accident to Times 360, saying the driver acted swiftly to prevent further damage and possible loss of fuel.
“Upon reaching Salafosi Village in Neno District, the driver noticed flames coming from the front tyres. He immediately stopped the vehicle, removed the terminals from the batteries, and disconnected the trailer. Members of the public who arrived at the scene also assisted him to extinguish the fire,” Msoliza said.
The truck’s cab was completely destroyed, but the trailer carrying the 35,000 litres of petrol remained intact, safeguarding the fuel consignment.
No injuries have been reported, and authorities say investigations are underway to establish the cause of the fire.
The police have since urged drivers of heavy vehicles to remain alert and conduct regular tyre and mechanical inspections to avoid similar incidents.
