Some civil servants have threatened to take unspecified action if the government does not reverse its decision to increase VAT from K16.5 per K100 to K17.5 per K100, and Pay As You Earn from K30 per K100.
In a letter to the Chief Secretary to the Government, signed by Kondwani Sakala Baikyo, Robert Wanangwa Gondwe, Chrissy Ligomeka, and Simplex Kachamba Jnr, the workers said the decision is inappropriate given their already insufficient salaries, adding that the tax increases will place further pressure on civil servants who are already struggling.
They said they want the government to engage them in discussions to find a better solution to the issue.
Meanwhile, government is yet to comment on he matter.
