Man Arrested For Allegedly Killing His Stepchild in Nkhata-Bay

Police in Nkhata Bay have arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion that he murdered his one-year-nine-month-old stepson.

Nkhata Bay Police deputy spokesperson Devoter Mithi,  has confirmed the arrest and identified the suspect as , Exton Saidi,

According to Mithi ,the incident occurred on Monday at Manyenyezi near Chikwina Trading Centre in the District.

Mithi said Saidi and his wife had gone to their garden, leaving the child at home since he was too young to walk. Saidi later returned home alone, leaving his wife behind in the garden.

“When the mother returned, she found the child drowned in a bucket of water,” Mithi explained.

Preliminary findings show the child had a bleeding wound in his mouth, suggesting possible assault before the drowning.

Police say investigations have revealed that the child had been a source of conflict in the couple’s marriage.

Saidi is expected to appear in court soon to answer a murder charge.
