As rains continue to fall across many parts of the country and farmers rush to buy farm inputs such as seed and fertilizer, some individuals have started taking advantage of the situation by engaging in fraudulent activities targeting unsuspecting farmers.

Police in Mzuzu have arrested two agro-dealers, Anold Mwale and Juma Ali, for allegedly selling counterfeit maize seed in the city.

Mzuzu Police Station spokesperson, Augustus Nkhwazi, says the suspects painted ordinary maize seed and repackaged it in sacks labelled “Mosanto” to deceive buyers.

Police have confiscated a bottle of red paint, a sack-sealing machine and empty sacks that were being used in the scam. The two suspects are expected to appear in court soon to answer charges related to fraud and selling fake farm inputs.

Meanwhile, police are advising farmers to purchase farm supplies only from trusted and certified dealers to avoid falling victim to such fraudulent activities.
