Two men are behind bars in Lilongwe after being caught vandalizing Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) equipment valued at K6.5 million.

The suspects, Pearson Julius (51) and Bright Chakale (42), allegedly cut down electricity poles and stole 2,100 meters of conductors on Monday, December 1, 2025, at Sinyala, Traditional Authority Masambankhunda.

Reports indicate that the duo, together with accomplices still at large, returned shortly after ESCOM had replaced the stolen property, making away with an additional 1,700 meters of power conductors. This followed a similar incident in the same area on November 13, 2025.

According to Lilongwe Police publicist Hastings Chigalu, the suspects, driving a Toyota Probox, registration number DA 6810, were apprehended after attempting to escape from angry villagers.

The vandalism has disrupted electricity supply in Ndaula, Phirilanjuzi, Kapombeza, Chiputu, and Ching’anula, leaving communities affected.

Police have since launched a manhunt for the remaining accomplices, who, alongside the arrested suspects, are expected to face vandalism-related charges in court. Meanwhile, law enforcers have recovered 350 meters of the stolen conductors.
