Police in Dedza have arrested a 28-year-old man, Chifundo Chimkonda, for conduct likely to cause a breach of peace after he and his colleagues allegedly harassed motorists while dressed in gule wamkulu regalia.
According to Dedza Police Spokesperson, Sergeant Beatrice Jefita, the incident occurred on Saturday when Chimkonda wearing a Kampini outfit together with other dancers, was stopping vehicles and demanding money from road users.
Trouble escalated when the group stopped a vehicle belonging to an Indian national who attempted to offer them a small amount of money. One of the dancers allegedly grabbed an entire bundle of cash from the victim and fled the scene.
The matter was immediately reported to police officers stationed at the Kalinyeke tollgate. When officers arrived, they found the suspects still blocking motorists and demanding money. Chimkonda was arrested on the spot, while efforts to trace the remaining suspects are underway.
Police have since condemned the conduct, saying cultural performances should not be used as a tool for intimidation or criminal activities.
Chimkonda hails from Chiphanzi Village, Traditional Authority Kaphuka in Dedza.
