Police in Lilongwe have arrested a 29-year-old man, Oscar Wiga, for allegedly injuring a five-year-old child while celebrating Mighty Wanderers’ loss to Mzuzu City Hammers by 2–1.

Lilongwe Police spokesperson Hastings Chigalu said the incident occurred on December 3 at the Shire Bus Depot.

According to Chigalu, after Wanderers lost, Wiga who was not related to the child—took the boy from his mother and began tossing him into the air as a way of “celebration.”

He reportedly threw the child three times, but on the fourth attempt, he failed to catch him, causing the boy to fall and sustain injuries.

The mother rushed the injured child to Bwaila Hospital, forcing her to miss her already-paid bus trip to Blantyre.

Wiga, who comes from Koloko Village under Traditional Authority Mlumbe in Zomba, is expected to answer a charge of causing bodily harm.
