Police in Mchinji have arrested 53-year-old Adam Raphael after he was allegedly found with 52 bags of suspected counterfeit fertiliser at Kamwendo Trading Centre.

Mchinji Police spokesperson Limbani Mpinganjira said Raphael told officers that the products were sourced from a company called Wado, but the bags did not bear Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) certification, which is required for legitimate fertiliser.

According to police, the 50-kilogramme bags were being sold at K130,000 each.

Farmers were reportedly instructed to form clubs and pay K30,000 upfront, with the remaining K100,000 to be settled after harvest.

Authorities have since urged farmers in the district to buy farm inputs only from certified agro-dealers, warning that fraudulent sales often increase during the farming season.

Raphael comes from Mtukwa Village, Traditional Authority Mlonyeni, in Mchinji.
