A Chitipa District Magistrate’s Court has sentenced 24-year-old Maganzi Mtambo to five years in prison after he was convicted of stealing a motorbike in Tanzania.

State prosecutor Sergeant Kondwani Malanga told the court that Mtambo stole the motorbike in October this year after deceiving the owner into escorting him to a witch doctor in Malawi. Upon arrival, Mtambo fled with the motorbike.

He was later arrested in Malawi following a police investigation. Although Mtambo denied the charges, the State paraded three witnesses whose evidence led to his conviction.

In his ruling, Magistrate Mike Lungu noted that Mtambo’s actions had the potential to strain relations between citizens of Malawi and Tanzania, before sentencing him to five years imprisonment.

Mtambo hails from Kapenda Village, Traditional Authority Mwaulambya, in Chitipa District.
